Workflow-oriented E-learning Moving from Contents towards Activities

A basic stance for almost all learning theories is that a person learns by (inter-)acting with his/her environment. So, in order to formalize a learning process it is necessary to categorize its activities and environment. Recent developments in the learning domain support both formalizations broadly: Activity Theory (AT) provides a unified view of how to specify generic learning elements at a conceptual level; Educational Modeling Languages (EMLs) support the specification of heterogeneous learning units. Taking these works as starting points, our purpose is to contribute to the formalization of learning activities and environments, and to provide adequate tools to support the execution of learning units built over them. In this task, we have considered issues managed in Workflow Management (WfM). Workflow is concerned with the automation of collaborative human activities inside the organizations to achieve an overall business goal, in our case, a learning goal.
